Center for Russian Nature Conservation

Center for Russian Nature Conservation (CRNC) is a project of the Tides Center. It focuses its work on Northern Eurasia, the countries of the former Soviet Union. CRNC supports projects in conservation legislation, land and water conservation, endangered species protection and environmental education.

CRNC Goals

CRNC has three main goals:

Information dissemination

With the aid of its Russian counterparts, CRNC channels information from Northern Eurasia to the western world. Conservationists, donors, scientists, decision-makers, the mass media and the western public at large are learning about the hidden treasures of Eurasian nature and the dedicated work of Eurasian conservationists through CRNC efforts. Together with its major partner in Russia, BCC, CRNC publishes Russian Conservation News, the only English-language magazine of its kind. Printed in the USA with the assistance of Pocono Environmental Education Center, it contains the latest information on a wide range of conservation issues in Northern Eurasia.

CRNC uses resources of the Socio- Ecological Union, the largest environmental alliance in the former Soviet Union, to assist the international environmental community in obtaining access to SEU databases and the extensive network of indigenous experts in Eurasia.

Likewise, CRNC assists Eurasian groups and activists in obtaining relevant information from the West. CRNC published (in Russian) a unique guide, "American Conservation Basics", a must for anyone who comes to the USA for training. CRNC helps Eurasian groups acquire necessary literature and access to on-line resources. One of our great priorities is the development of our World Wide Web site, dedicated to Eurasian nature and conservation.

Assistance with project development and fundraising

Based in the USA and located near many organizations and foundations interested in environmental assistance to Russia, CRNC provides information to Russian colleagues about funding opportunities and advises donors on how to effectively support conservation efforts in the FSU. In 1996 CRNC was instrumental in bringing together representatives from 10 environmental NGOs in Eurasia and a number of American donors at a roundtable in New York. The event was organized in cooperation with the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity and a consortium of Eurasia-focused US conservation groups. Materials prepared for the Roundtable on how to do grantmaking in the former USSR and who funds what in Russian conservation today are available through CRNC. Due to its close links with key environmental groups in Eurasia, CRNC always has the most reliable and up-to-date information about a host of on-going local, regional, and nation-wide conservation projects in Eurasia.

Facilitation of professional exchanges

CRNC has organized many exchange programs in nature conservation between Russia and the United States. CRNC has been working with such organizations as the US National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy , Pocono Environmental Education Center, Earthisland Institute, National Parks and Conservation Association and other groups. CRNC is also interested in assisting young American conservationists in getting internships in Eurasia.

As a part of its Environmental Exchanges program, CRNC is analyzing the need for future exchanges based on the responses of over 50 experienced organizers and participants of such exchanges in Russia and in the US.

Coordination of CRNC

CRNC has been a project of the Tides Center (San Francisco, CA) since May of 1996. As a project of Tides, CRNC is covered by the 501(c)3 status as a charitable non-profit organization. CRNC has a dedicated Steering Committee (SC) currently consisting of six regular members and two associates. The SC possesses a unique blend of expertise in fundraising, Russian- American relations, and hands-on nature conservation to ensure success of CRNC's work. The current SC members are affiliated with The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Pocono Environmental Education Center, Earth Island Institute, ISAR: A Clearinghouse on Grassroots Cooperation in Eurasia, the Institute for Non-proliferation Studies and Biodiversity Conservation Center of SEU.

What You Can Do To Help

Your tax-deductible contribution would enable CRNC to improve our information services offered to Eurasian conservationists and to continue to keep the western public informed about the new, exciting issues in nature conservation in the FSU. It will also help to support a few on-the-ground projects of Russian environmental grassroots groups and nature reserves striving to protect the last truly wild part of our planet.

YES! I would like to help CRNC in its important work! Enclosed is my check or money order payable to CRNC/Tides Center
